Spring time

Spring time in the Dakotas doesn’t always come in a timely manner.

As I sat down to write a page on here about spring I thought it would be so easy. There is so many things about spring that I love and so much going on to write about. However I find myself short of words with this years spring.

This years winter has been long and cold having many of us looking forward to spring coming. However winter keeps showing its face late into May flooding in some parts of the country. Now that June is here we are finally into the thick of spring, just a little late.

It’s the time of the year the birds return and the flowers start to bloom. The area livestock is having their babies. Which means lots of baby calves, lambs and foals. I enjoy seeing all of these babies on my drive to town. Watching them run and play in the pastures as they grow.

This year, with the delayed spring, I am behind on planting vegetable gardens and my flowers. Its the beginning of June and my tulips are just now blooming. Nice to finally see.

So that means now its time to get to work and get all caught up. So I am spending my weekend planting a new shade perennial flower bed. I am planting bleeding hearts, goatsbeard and false goat’s beard. All three of these plants I’m told are shade loving plants.

Now gardening projects aren’t the only things my family and I do in the spring. This is also the time of year I start all of my house projects. Last year my daughter and I started a paver patio in the back yard.

This year we are planning a water feature of some kind. We have a patch in the backyard of dead grass from my granddaughters pool. So we are going to take advantage of the area. Since its a larger area we are thinking a pond with some rocks around the edge and plants. Hopefully we can get started on this soon, but I need to finish planting first.

Now I’m going to go sit on that patio enjoy a nice glass of wine and enjoy a nice spring evening.
